The Georgia School District uses swab tests to “detect and punish the possession and use of marijuana on campus”

The company claims that these kits can “detect cannabis in plant materials, oils, liquids, e-cigarette tubes, e-cigarette juices, gels, creams, and food.”
SwabTek, a presumptive testing company for drugs and explosives, announced that two of the largest school districts in Georgia will adopt its cannabis testing products, which the company claims will help “protect campuses” from so-called cannabis hazards.
According to the company’s press release, these tests “can be used both as a means to detect and punish the possession and use of marijuana on campus, but also to prevent future violations.”
SwabTek’s Vape Pens and Edibles cannabis test kits are based on a “simple, swab-based collection procedure,” which the company says allows school resource officers (SRO) and school security personnel to take samples from cigarette holders, ink cartridges, and casings. “Test for the presence of marijuana in a few seconds.”
The test kits retail for US$250 (approximately US$313), and the company claims that these kits can “detect cannabis in plant materials, oils, liquids, e-cigarette tubes, e-cigarette juices, gels, creams, and food.”
Confusingly, the company stated that these tests can detect “Δ-9-THC, CBC, CBD, CBN, hemp, industrial hemp, cannabinoids, hemp and hemp”-cannabinoids, concentrates, hemp types and The absurd combination of slang for marijuana.
Representatives of the Forsyth County Board of Education in Cumming, Georgia, took an unusual move. This is a public school board that publicly supports the product.
“Our number one use of SwabTek is e-cigarettes,” said Steve Honn, assistant director of school safety at the Forsyth County Board of Education, in a SwabTek press release.
“In terms of e-cigarette use in our schools, it is declining,” Horn added. “[SwabTek] helped us a lot.”
Despite the enthusiastic description, Horn told The GrowthOp that the school district does not endorse the product. Horn said the test itself was conducted by the local sheriff’s office, not by school district personnel, although the latter provided the test for law enforcement.
“I don’t think there is as much recognition and support for products that we think are being used by law enforcement agencies,” Honn said. “This is not a product directly used by the school system. It is the sheriff’s office that uses it locally.”
Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office SRO Director Noah Sprague said in a SwabTek press release that these tests are an important part of the department’s school policing approach.
“Test kits, dog searches, administration, school safety, and the sheriff’s office are all working together, and we are starting to see a decline in [vaping]… This is a team effort, so SwabTek is definitely part of the team , ” He says.
