Houghton, Maine (WAGM)-Houghton Regional Hospital’s new heart monitor is easier to wear and less cumbersome for patients. Adriana Sanchez tells the story.
Despite many setbacks caused by COVID-19, local hospitals are still upgrading. Holden District says these new heart monitors have brought benefits to patients and healthcare providers.
“We have these new, easy-to-use monitors that enable patients to perform all their usual activities, including work and bathing. In addition to swimming, they can do many other things they want to do without worrying about the monitor itself, they” Dr. Ted Sussman, Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at Holden Regional Hospital, said: “Compared with before, it is much smaller and does not require a separate battery pack, so this makes it very convenient for patients to use.”
These new heart monitors will be worn for 14 days and record every heartbeat heard. A few years ago, they provided a service called event monitor, which will be worn for a week to 30 days, and patients will have to press a record button, which does not always catch irregularities Heartbeat.
“Therefore, we can find extra heartbeats, we can find abnormal rhythms of the heart, such as atrial fibrillation, which is an important cause of stroke in the patient population, and it is also a more dangerous heart rhythm. In addition, it can also be used to determine someone’s Is the heart rate controlled well enough with medication that they may be taking it or may cause arrhythmia,” Sussman said.
The new monitor will allow patients to see a doctor at Holden Hospital without having to drive to other places.
RN and Cardiology Manager Ingrid Black said: “We are asking physicians and physician extension staff to contact us to obtain a device that can record for a long time, and our patients will have to go elsewhere and be able to own its own facilities and facilities. Preventing people from having to drive makes us very excited.”
Sussman said that one of their goals is to be able to provide many services locally, which is a step in the right direction.
