November 14, 2021 is the World Diabetes Day and this year’s theme is ”Access to Diabetes Care”.
It is worth noting that the ”younger” trend of diabetes has become more apparent, and the incidence of chronic diseases, led by diabetes and cardiovascular disease, has risen sharply, which has brought great challenges to the public health system all around the world.
According to IDF statistics, diabetes is spiralling out of control. In 2021, the number of adult diabetic patients in the world reached 537 million, which means that 1 in 10 adults are living with diabetes, almost half are undiagnosed. Over 4 in 5 adults with diabetes live in low- and middle-income countries.
About 6.7 million deaths due to diabetes or its complications in 2021, accounting for more than one-tenth (12.2%) of all-cause deaths worldwide, 1 person will die from diabetes every 5 seconds.
Although insulin has been discovered for 100 years, diabetes still cannot be cured today. This century-old problem requires the joint efforts of patients and doctors.
