Health authorities agree to use rapid antigen test to detect COVID-19

Thailand: With the surge in COVID-19 infections, the Ministry of Public Health is speeding up rapid antigen testing to speed up case detection.
In addition to current RT-PCR methods, these tests will be used to produce the most accurate results.
Dr. Supakit Sirilak, Director-General of the Department of Medicine (DMS), said that medical institutions have discussed rapid testing activities in response to the record daily number of infections and deaths.
He said that the authorities are now considering whether to provide rapid test kits for home use, but warned that they are not 100% accurate.
The Thai Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) has approved 24 brands of rapid antigen test kits for use in hospitals and testing centers.
Dr. Supakit added that suspected cases with no symptoms and negative antigen tests should self-isolate at home and perform another rapid test a few days later. If the test result is positive, the result must be confirmed by RT-PCR test.
However, high-risk groups and people with symptoms should immediately undergo RT-PCR testing, and medical units with high demand can perform rapid antigen testing first.
