COVID home test kits will be available in Taiwan next week: FDA

Taipei, June 19 (CNA) The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on Saturday that it will provide COVID-19 home test kits in stores across Taiwan next week.
FDA Deputy Director of Medical Devices and Cosmetics Qian Jiahong said that home testing kits will not be sold online, but in physical stores such as pharmacies and licensed medical equipment suppliers.
He said that the price of a nucleic acid home test kit may exceed NT$1,000 (US$35.97), and the rapid antigen self-test kit will be much cheaper.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) recommends in its COVID-19 home testing guidelines that anyone with symptoms of COVID-19 should seek medical attention immediately.
The Ministry of Health stated that if a person in home quarantine tested positive using the COVID-19 family kit, they should immediately contact the local health department or call the “1922″ hotline for help.
In addition to these guidelines, Chien said that test strips showing positive results should also be brought to the hospital, where they will be properly handled, and individuals will also undergo polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests to confirm whether they are infected.
He said that if the home test result is negative, the test strips and cotton swabs should be placed in a small plastic bag and then thrown into the trash can.
Taiwan has authorized four domestic companies to import three types of COVID-19 home test kits for sale to the public.
Earlier this week, the FDA also approved the domestic production of a rapid home test kit for COVID-19.
